IMPORTANT
Over the years and during the
best of economic times, we've seen many
solar panel manufacturers come and go. In light of the current economic
crisis, it has been estimated that more than 30 small sized solar
manufacturers will face financial failure over the next 8 to 10 months
and
over 100 solar manufacturers worldwide will either fail or will be acquired
by larger more established manufacturers within the next 2 years, taking
their warrantees with them, leaving consumers with the potential for failed
products and no recourse. In an effort to survive the these tough economic
times, many of these cash strapped manufacturers have begun dumping their
solar panels here in the U.S.
While shopping for a solar
system, you may find solar dealers who are
offering these non brand name solar panels at bargain basement prices describing them as
"high quality solar modules" or "top of the line product".
Some dealers will even tout that there solar panels have all U.S. made
materials in them. The fact is
that regardless of a U.L. rating or where a solar panel's materials are made
or how well a solar
panel appears to be constructed, the most important consideration behind the purchase of
any solar panel is the manufacturer's ability to honor their 20 to 25 year warranty and a
measure of that ability is the financial strength of the name behind the product.
With more than 11 years of
experience in this industry, it is our opinion that if you are considering
the purchase of solar panels from a small, non publicly traded manufacturer then you are probably on a path to
facing issues that will
appear within the first 3 to 5 years of system ownership.
Most solar panel failures are
non-repairable. Failures are typically caused by cold solder joints,
moisture intrusion, poor quality glass, laminating materials, cells and
backing.
Solar cells are permanently
laminated to the panels glass surface and it is virtually impossible to
remove a solar panel's Tedlar backing without damaging the solar cells. If
the solar panel manufacturer has closed up shop and your solar panels have
failed then all that you are left with is a bunch of worthless glass and
aluminum that you will have to pay someone to remove from your roof.
Here at Solatron we only offer
top name brand solar panels in our grid tie solar systems from well established,
very large, publicly traded or very large U.S.
based manufacturers
that possess the financial muscle to honor their warrantees. Buying non name
brand solar modules may save you 10% to 15% up front, but 3 or 4 years from
now if those bargain brand solar panels fail and the manufacturer is
nowhere to be found, any money that you saved today will be worthless
without an enforceable warranty.
No matter what solar dealer you
buy your solar system from, we recommend that you always insist on solar
panels from large name brand manufacturers who are much more likely to be
there decades from now to honor their warranty should you have a solar panel failure.
The bottom line is this: When
it comes to buying a solar system, you are far better off saving your money
and continue to pay
your current electric bill than to buy a solar system with the potential for a
non-enforceable
warranty.
